GUGGER PETTER

Born in Denmark, Gugger Petter studied art in Copenhagen, Rome, Mexico City and Belgium. She began using newspaper as her medium after she moved to California in 1986. It is the medium she uses today to create both two- and three-dimensional work.

Petter’s innovative and masterful use of the lowly newspaper is intriguing. Even though we may consider newspaper to be insubstantial and even fragile as a medium in an archival sense, Petter heavily lacquers the newspaper, which preserves it indefinitely. Color is woven into the black and white print from the Sunday comics section or advertisements. Sometimes she paints her newspaper canvas to embellish the design. Daily events documented in “the diary of our lives,” as Petter describes newspapers, are transformed by the artist into street scenes -- legs of men and women walking their dogs, faces of women with red lips, sometimes wearing sunglasses, observations of daily life captured by a daily material. Petter uses newspapers that are current at the time she makes the piece.
