Life of Making

This short documentary similarly celebrates the work and workings of three internationally acclaimed artists who explore the boundary between the act of making and the art of living. Jim Melchert, June Schwarcz, and Kay Sekimachi have each worked for decades to integrate the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of engagement with their respective process and materials.

Statement on the Artist
Sekimachi is an internationally acclaimed artist who has been on the forefront of the transformation of fiber arts over the last sixty years:
“Kay Sekimachi’s work is marked by simplicity of form and lightness, while representing a revolution in contemporary weaving techniques. She is an accomplished master of technique and a minimalist, an artist who challenges traditional sculptural approaches while widening the potential of fibre and paper media. ‘Kay is her art,’ comments Kenneth R. Trapp, former Curator-in-Charge of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. ‘Humble, honest, sincere, brimming with integrity and dignity, and always in search of new expressions…Putting it simply, to me Sekimachi’s art is the essence of purity. Studied, thoughtful, contemplative, deliberate, assured, quiet and calm, her art expands our restricted world to embrace fibres as wondrous materials for creative expression.’ ”
Kevin Wallace, Craft Arts International, No. 66, 2006
