TIM TATE

Tim

Statement on the Artist
Tim Tate set out years ago to create art in glass that was based on ideas. Today his work combines blown and cast glass, video and audio components, and cameras in order to tell stories. Tate says, “As I work more and more with this new style, the pieces become progressively more complex … there’s an intellectual, an auditory, a visual, and an emotional component to every one of my pieces.”  Sometimes the narrative is social or political commentary, and sometimes it involves the viewer in reminiscences about the human experience, including healing and spirituality.  For Tate’s video installations, he sees them “blending a traditional craft with new media technology, giving me the framework in which I fit my artistic narrative.  Revelation - and in some cases self-revelation - is the underlying theme of my electronic reliquaries.”

“These works are phylacteries of sorts, the transparent reliquaries in which bits of saints’ bones or hair – relics - are displayed.  In many cultures and religions, relics are believed to have magical or spiritual powers, especially for healing. Tate’s relics are temporal, sounds and moving images formally enshrined, encapsulating experiences like cultural specimens.  And perhaps, to the contemporary soul, they are no less reliquaries than those containing the bones of a saint.”  - Holis Walker, Art Critic
